What Kind of Sugar Cube Is Best for an Old Fashioned? A Thanksgiving Cocktail Worth Sharing
Share
With good reason, Thanksgiving is prime for the best jokes. Uncle Eddie with his camper outside, children laughing and running through the house, loud debates about stuffing, eyes rolling over politics, burnt pies, everyone squeezed in at the table. This is why we focus on serving the best possible cocktails!
This year, we are serving an Orange Cherry Old Fashioned. It’s a hospitable way to welcome guests before dinner, and our Cubes make it easy to mix while keeping an eye on the mashed potatoes.
What Kind of Sugar Cube Is Best for an Old Fashioned?
A traditional Old Fashioned is made with whiskey, sugar, bitters, and a little water. A classic cocktail that needs very little fussing.
A plain sugar cube works fine, but a flavored Sugar Cube adds another layer of complementary flavors without requiring extra syrups or ingredients.
Our Orange Cherry Sugar Cubes combine bright orange and sweet cherry flavors, both wonderful companions to bourbon. Add a few dashes of bitters, and you have a cocktail that feels right at home on a Thanksgiving afternoon.
Thanksgiving Orange Cherry Old Fashioned

- 2 oz bourbon
- 1 Storied Goods Orange Cherry Sugar Cube
- 2–3 dashes aromatic bitters
- 1 teaspoon water
- Ice
- Orange peel, for garnish
Instructions
1. Place an Orange Cherry Sugar Cube in an Old Fashioned glass.
2. Add the bitters and water. Muddle gently until the Cube dissolves.
3. Pour in the bourbon and stir.
4. Add a large ice cube and stir again until chilled.
5. Express an orange peel over the glass, then add it to the cocktail.
That is it. A beautiful cocktail, ready in a few minutes, with no drippy simple syrup to make and no long list of ingredients.
A Few Ideas for Serving Thanksgiving Cocktails
If you are hosting this year, set out your favorite cocktail glasses, a bottle of good bourbon, some bitters, and an open tin of Storied Goods Orange Cherry Sugar Cubes.
We love the idea of making the first round of cocktails as guests arrive. Uncle Eddie pours the bourbon, Jean stirs in the Cubes, and soon everyone is happily gathered around the kitchen counter, catching up before dinner.
The same deliciousness is also for guests who prefer an alcohol-free drink. Try an Orange Cherry Sugar Cube in hot black tea, sparkling water, or hot cider. Add the sparkling water to dissolve the Cube and top with ice, or mull Cubes in with hot cider and a cinnamon stick.
A Little Something for the Thanksgiving Host
If you are lucky enough to be a guest this Thanksgiving, bring a hostess gift more original than the same bottle of wine.
A tin of our Orange Cherry Sugar Cubes tucked alongside a bottle of bourbon or tin of tea makes a thoughtful gift. Add a handwritten note with the Old Fashioned recipe, and you have shared a real gift! Shop Storied Goods Orange Cherry Sugar Cubes, and bring the joy to your Thanksgiving gathering.
