How to Use Cocktail Sugar Cubes: A Simple Guide for Drinks at Home

Sugar has been part of cocktail-making for centuries, and it's not only because of our need for sweet. Just as sugar is necessary for your favorite cake or pastry recipe, it plays an important role in many of our favorite cocktails. Sugar softens the bite of spirits, balances citrus and bitters, and creates a luxurious mouth feel. And we all want more of that!

Thankfully, making a good drink at home does not need to involve a bar cart full of syrups, measuring tools, garnishes, and ingredients you will use once and then realize the expiration date was 2017.

That is where a cocktail Sugar Cube comes in.

At Storied Goods, we make gourmet Sugar Cubes with flavor already infused: orange and cherry, cinnamon and vanilla, rose petals, and other ingredients that add sweetness, character, and intrigue to drinks.

Drop in a Cube. Add your drink. Stir, muddle, or let it dissolve. Enjoy. Because life is already complicated enough.

So what exactly is a cocktail Sugar Cube?

A cocktail Sugar Cube is an already-measured portion of sugar used in place of loose sugar or simple syrup. A flavored or infused Sugar Cube goes a step further by bringing additional flavors into the glass.

For example, our Orange Cherry Sugar Cubes. We create a precise combination of sugar with orange zest and tart cherry, ideal for an Old Fashioned, where those flavors already belong.

Instead of measuring sugar, peeling oranges, and digging through that cherry jar, you begin with one Cube. Not just a shortcut. A beautiful drink made easier. And bonus, no red dye on your fingers.

How do you use cocktail Sugar Cubes?

For a spirit-forward cocktail such as an Old Fashioned, place the Sugar Cube in the bottom of the glass, add bitters (if you want), and muddle until the Cube begins to break down. Add bourbon or rye, a big cube of ice, then stir.

The Cube may not fully dissolve at first, and that's a good thing. As you enjoy your Old Fashioned, the Sugar Cube keeps dissolving, and your drink becomes more and more delicious.

In a hot drink, drop the Cube directly into the glass or mug and stir. The heat helps it dissolve quickly.

For sparkling drinks, add a Cube and pour the sparkling wine or other sparkling beverage over it. The bubbles react with the Cube, gradually releasing its sweetness and flavor. This is my favorite way to use our Cubes. It's magical to watch the Cube change with the bubbles!

Start with drinks you already know.

Luckily, you do not need to learn a lot of new recipes to use our Sugar Cubes. (Remember our life-is-complicated-enough belief?).

Unlike bottled syrups, our Cubes are shelf stable, require no refrigeration, are pre-measured and are not drippy. Have you ever tried to throw your favorite syrup in your suitcase? Trust us, our tins of Cubes travel much better!

So, you have all the Sugar Cube flavors. Now what? Start with something you already drink and consider what flavor would make it more delicious, more pleasurable, more interesting.

Coffee + Cinnamon Vanilla
Cinnamon and vanilla turn an ordinary cup of coffee into something warmer and cozier. Think…crackling fire, woven blanket, and snow on the windowsill.

Old Fashioned + Orange Cherry
Sugar, orange and cherry are the classic Old Fashioned ingredients. An Orange Cherry Sugar Cube brings flavor and texture together with the bitters and whiskey. Think…leather chair, your record player, and nowhere to be.

Tea + Rose Petal
Rose has been used in food and drinks across cultures for centuries. A Rose Petal Sugar Cube adds sweetness, a very light rose aroma and real petals floating in the cup. We all deserve that kind of beauty on an ordinary Tuesday. Think…screened-in porch, soft wind, and perfect quiet.

Sparkling wine + Celebration Sparkle
A pink Celebration Sparkle Sugar Cube contains edible glitter and rhubarb bitters. Drop one into a glass of sparkling wine and watch the shimmer dance with the bubbles. Essentially, a party in a glass. Think…your closest friends, pjs, popcorn, and endless gabbing.

This is a beginning, but we aren't big rule-followers. We want you to play. And please let us know what you create!

Do Sugar Cubes dissolve in cold drinks?

Not easily. Sugar Cubes need heat, alcohol, bubbles, or vigorous muddling to help them dissolve into your favorite drinks.

Are cocktail Sugar Cubes only for alcohol?

Not at all! The same principles work beautifully with alcohol-free drinks.

Try Cinnamon Vanilla in coffee or hot chocolate, Rose Petal in tea, or Orange Cherry in sparkling cider. Celebration Sparkle turns alcohol-free sparkling wine into the same party without the buzz.

Why use a flavored Sugar Cube instead of simple syrup?

Simple syrup requires measuring, refrigeration after opening, more space, and more towels for wiping drips.

A flavored Sugar Cube is shelf-stable and already portioned. Our tins take up a small bit of counter or bar cart space, are easy to keep on hand, make perfect gifts, and travel beautifully.

The most important thing our Cubes do is make an ordinary ritual feel beautiful and elevated.

We created Storied Goods because we love hospitality and the small details that make people feel valued and celebrated, whether it's your partner, your co-worker, or yourself.

A Tuesday afternoon coffee at your desk.
